Municipal elections on 13 October 2024

Non-Belgians can also take part in the municipal elections on 13 October. Find out whether you qualify and what you need to do.

The municipal and provincial elections are held on 13 October 2024. 

EU citizens and non-EU citizens may cast their vote in the municipal elections. You first need to be registered on the electoral list.

What are the conditions?

If you want to vote, you need to:

  • be entered in the population register of the City of Ghent on 1 August 2024
  • be at least 18 years old on 13 October 2024
  • not have your voting rights suspended or withdrawn on 13 October 2024

If you are a non-EU citizen, you also need to:

  • be able to demonstrate that you have been a legal resident of Belgium for an uninterrupted period of at least 5 years, on 31 July 2024 at the latest
  • declare that you will abide by Belgium’s principal laws

Registration on the electoral list is free of charge.

What steps need to be taken?

1. Register on the electoral list

Register prior to 1 August 2024

Hand in the form at the Election Counter in the City Office or a service centre. You will have to make an appointment for this. You can also send the form by regular mail to the Civil Affairs department at the address: Dienst Burgerzaken – Loket Verkiezingen, p/a Stadhuis, Botermarkt 1, 9000 Gent, together with a copy of your identity card.

2. You will receive a letter

The Election Counter will examine your registration. Upon approval, you will receive a letter stating that you have been registered on the electoral list. You will receive an invitation letter about two weeks before 13 October 2024.

3. You may cast your vote

You may now cast your vote on election day. The invitation letter you received will state the polling place and station you need to vote at.

Bring your residence card and invitation letter to the polling station.
