European Health Insurance Card
With a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) you do not need to take additional health insurance in Belgium. Get one from your health insurer in your home country. You should check if it is valid for your entire stay in Belgium and bring the card with you to Belgium. If you have to pay for any medical services, drop by your health insurer and they take care of the paperwork to ensure you are reimbursed.
If your health insurer in your home country is unable to give you an EHIC or you are given another document, please register yourself with a health insurer in Belgium. Follow this proces.
Important! An EHIC is compulsary if you do not have an income in Belgium and you are required to be insured in another EEA-country or Switzerland during your stay in Belgium.
Supplementary insurance
We would also like to advise you to take out a supplementary repatriation insurance before your departure if this is not included in your health insurance. An additional private liability insurance is also strongly recommended. You might need it after (accidentally) hurting other persons or damaging other people’s property.
