Applying for Belgian nationality

Would you like to apply for Belgian nationality? There are three ways to do so. Review your options and the steps you need to take.

What is it about?

If you are not a Belgian citizen, there are three ways to become one:

  • Automatic acquisition
  • Declaration of nationality
  • Naturalisation

For more details on these procedures, visit the website of the Agency for Integration and Citizenship (Dutch).

You can also request a nationality certificate for yourself or another person.

If you need proof of your Belgian nationality, you can request a certificate of Belgian nationality.

How much does it cost?

Starting your application is free of charge.

Once your application is ready, you will need to pay 150 euro online and include the proof of payment with your application.

What do I need?

For your first visit to Civil Affairs - Nationality, bring your residence card and birth certificate.

If your birth certificate is not in Dutch, French, or German, a certified translation is required. Both the birth certificate and the translation must have an apostille or legalisation.

How does an application work?

  1. If you live in Ghent, make an appointment with Civil Affairs - Nationality at the City Office, where you will have an initial consultation. Together, we will determine the best procedure for you and prepare a personalised information sheet.
  2. Gather the documents listed on the information sheet and make another appointment. We will check your documents.
  3. Once your application file is complete and verified, you pay online and make another appointment. You will then make your declaration. Don’t forget your documents and proof of payment!
  4. We will send your file to the public prosecutor’s office. The police will visit your address for a personal interview. Then, you’ll have to wait.
  5. You will receive a letter with the decision.
