Registering in Ghent as an EU job seeker
Even if you are still looking for a job, you must register. Read more about it on this page.
What is it about?
EU citizens enjoy the free movement of persons. This allows you to look for work in Belgium. You can start your job search without registering, and if you find a job, you can request a BelgianIDpro number. If you plan to work and live in Belgium for more than 3 months, you must register.
What are the conditions?
- You live at a private address in Ghent.
- You are an EU citizen.
- You are looking for work.
How much does it cost?
Opening your file in Ghent is free.
For the residence card, you pay
Standard procedure | 29 euro |
Urgent procedure | 130 euro |
What do I need?
At the start of your procedure:
- Your valid identity card or passport.
Within 3 months after starting your procedure:
Proof of registration with VDAB or job application proofs.
AND
- Proof of a real chance of employment within a reasonable time (e.g., diploma, professional training, VDAB individual professional training, previous contracts, etc.).
What are the steps?
- Make an appointment (Dutch) with the Migration Office.
- At the appointment, you will receive proof of registration.
- The police will check your address.
- You will receive an invitation (link) by email to apply for your residence card or to submit additional proofs of your job search. Using this link, you can make an appointment to apply for your EU card or to submit job proofs.
- You collect your residence card at the location where you applied for it.
You do not need to make an appointment for this, except at the Wijkkantoor Rabot.
